One of the best - and worst - additions to the game imo. First of all, it is too easy to make a program, bot, or use another method to track the combos. It is also exploitable in several ways, including the fact there is not much of a level restriction, yet the exp is level-based. Additionally, it would be easy to stealth hit pents even if such a restriction were added.
Various suggestions (buffs as well as nerfs):
- Fix the ingame pent tracker to track the most recent pents hit, rather than listing them by experience. This would allow a color combo at any time during a solve, rather than having to wait and hit the first X pents.
- With the above, allow multiple color combos per solve.
- Make pent colors truly random or create a system in which tracking or memorization is not a factor.
- If making pent colors completely random, transform the color combo bonus into a "color chain" bonus, adding additional exp for each pent of the same color.
- Increase the exp for pents/solves substantially and lower the exp for color combos.
- Remove, modify, or change the clan "Pentagram Bonus". It boosts pent exp by 20% at max level, essentially making it a second learning bonus if you level from pents. Perhaps, if making pent colors completely random, a clan bonus could shift the rate at which X color pents appear, perhaps up to 66% in favor of a certain color.
- Create a "leaderboard" on the website for those who have hit the most color combos so it is easy to see who is abusing the system.
- Increase or reduce the number of pents for a combo, in conjunction with any of the other suggestions.
- Add a check for demon kill within the last X seconds to get bonus experience from a color combo.
- Rework the color combo experience formula to where you should be penting more or less in the correct level zone to receive the exp boost.
- Weaken ice pent demons in such a way that makes the jump from fire to ice less substantial.
- Add different rewards for different color combos. For example: green = experience, red = military experience, blue = guaranteed stone/item drop.
- Award small buffs upon completing a color combo, along the lines of shrines in zombies (wv, mana, speed, etc.).
- Decrease area power level upon completing a color combo (this was in A3Res but underutilized). Power levels in pents seem to be extremely high.
- Perhaps remove color combos entirely, and give a new system where a demon lord or boss of some kind can give you a secret "combination" (e.g. RRGBGR, think Exk Library) that will give a substantial reward. Likewise, a specific combo could possibly spawn a special boss.
I would most hopefully like to see the first suggestion, in which the tracker will actually count X pents hit "in a row". It would also be fantastic if the color combos shifted into some sort of military exp/catchup mechanic or tunnel alternative. I liked the sound of demon lord bosses awarding a massive amount of military exp, but Horo mentioned that this would only be if they were slain below a certain level. I am also hugely in favor of randomly generated colors along with a color chain bonus, as I think the RNG component could be pretty fun. Okay, that's all I have for now - back to PoE.
