ps aux not showing area 38, it means your area did not go online. You cannot /goto if the area is not up. Try ./server -a 38 (without -d!) and show me the output. It will run the process in the foreground. It will show any start-up errors that may prevent your area from going online.
The output is fine. Your area is now online and running. I assume you had the area running when you tried to access it When you close a linux terminal, a non-daemon process will terminate. So from now on you can run area 38 with -d.
I now realized I forgot to mention that you need to add an entry for your area to the MYSQL databse.
You should boot mysql and add an entry for area 38. You can check the merc.sql file (part of the server source) for examples of area entries (cameron etc.).
